The Church Council members and their purpose/responsibilities are:
CHRISTIAN DEVELOPMENT - provides leadership so that people at each stage of their lives may come to know God through worship, study, work, fellowship and witness and determines and meets the educational needs of the congregation
COMMUNICATIONS - facilitates communication between the Church Council and the Congregation and between the church and external groups and individuals; standardizes written and web-based communications prepared by members and staff; creates the Royal News and maintains the website
FELLOWSHIP - establishes a spirit of fellowship through interaction and a solid show of mutual support to members of longstanding as well as those new to the Congregation
FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP - attends to the collection and management of all financial resources of the Congregation
FUTURE DIRECTIONS - engages the Congregation in setting priorities and goals for the coming year and assessing the success of past programs and initiatives and develops recommendations for the long-term direction of the Church
LAY REP TO STAFF - makes sure that matters raised at Staff Meeting, and requiring follow-up by the Church Council, a committee, a team, or the congregation, are brought to the appropriate body.contact person for the current church year.
LAY REPS TO PRESBYTERY - participates actively in the work of the Presbytery and to conveys information and reports as appropriate
MEMBERSHIP RECORDS - oversees the keeping of the church roll, ensuring that a clear record is kept of the admission date, removal, and other actions concerning each member
MINISTRY AND PERSONNEL - works with permanent staff in a consultative, supportive and confidential setting
MUSIC - has general oversight of the music program
NEW MEMBERS - recruits, welcomes and supports new members
OUTREACH - promotes God’s love and justice everywhere by identifying ways in which the Congregation can learn about and support faith and justice issues globally, nationally and locally
PASTORAL CARE - provides care, concern and connection for the members and adherents of the Congregation through lay pastoral visitation, communication and special events
PROPERTY - maintains and furnishes all church properties, oversees the use of rooms in the church and provides day-to-day supervision of custodial staff
TRUSTEES - hold property for the use and benefit of the congregation as part of the United Church. They hold title to the property (not only the Real Estate, but other types of valuable property, including money, investments, furniture and equipment).
All decisions made by the Trustees are in conformity with the BOARD of TRUSTEES Handbook as prepared by The United Church of Canada; AND as directed by the Church Council of Royal York Road United Church.”
UCW - unites the women of the Congregation for the total mission of the United Church
VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP - oversees the management of our church’s volunteers and provides guidance and development opportunities to all those in positions of voluntary leadership
WORSHIP - works with the ministerial team and the Music Director on long-term planning for worship services including music for worship; supports the sacraments of baptism and communion; and makes decisions on changes to the order of the services
WORSHIP SUPPORT - assures the preparation of the sanctuary for weekly and special worship services; trains and schedules members to support worship services through welcoming, ushering, coffee hour, and counting
