Over the years, the Christian church has considered the task of growing in wisdom and understanding to be central to a life of faith. At Royal York Road United Church opportunities abound for spiritual growth. Members are offered a choice of daytime or evening interactive study sessions guided by strong leadership.
The following educational opportunities are currently being offered in the hope they will be of interest and assistance to you.
Sunday Morning Bible Study: Every Sunday morning at 9:30, you are invited to participate in a group that will read and reflect upon the Biblical texts to be read in that day’s worship service. This is intended to be a meditative and contemplative approach to Scripture that requires no advance reading or preparation. Please come and try it out!
Wednesday Evening Group: On Wednesday evenings between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., you are invited to participate in a discussion group that focuses mainly on spirituality, exploring some of the ways we connect with God and practice our faith in daily life. Whether you’ve been thinking about some particular Biblical stories, are troubled or excited by something you’ve recently read, or have some religious questions that you’d really like to discuss, this is the place for you! Everyone welcome!
Friday Morning Book Club: On the first Friday morning of every month, between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., you are invited to join in a discussion of a recent book that has made the news or generated some real buzz. Book discussions have included such books as a controversial new book written by local United Church minister Greta Vosper, entitled: With Or Without God: Why The Way We Live Is More Important Than What We Believe and many others. Please plan to attend! For the upcoming book(s) please check the News & Events section or contact the church.
The Body, Mind and Spirit (BMS) group meets on the fourth Sunday of each month at 9:00 am from September to November and January to May. Women are invited to bring their own coffee and enjoy a program designed to enrich their spiritual journey through a creative approach to faith. The group aims to have a balance of body, mind and spirit activities. It has walked the High Park labyrinth as an annual fall program, experienced Art as Prayer and meditating with art, and learned Tai Chi’h Chi, therapeutic touch, Feldenkrais and liturgical dance. The women have also learned about several spiritual practices such as journaling and contemplative prayer, self care and spiritual direction. They’ve enjoyed the fun of decorating spring wreaths, and painting mugs and Easter eggs.
